USCCB: Catholics Invited to Pray an Act of Reparation on Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, June 16, 2023

Brother Knights, please read the very important statements below from the USCCB and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Then share this message, gather your families, and join Catholics everywhere tomorrow, June 16, 2023, in prayers of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The prayers are at the bottom of this message.

From the USCCB:

WASHINGTON – On June 16, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee for Religious Liberty, joined by Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, have called on Catholics to pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and make an act of reparation—an act offered to the Lord with the intention of repairing the spiritual damage inflicted by sin.

The bishops’ invitation to the faithful follows:

“Catholic Christians traditionally recognize June as the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During this time, we call to mind Christ’s love for us, which is visible in a special way in the image of His pierced heart, and we pray that our own hearts might be conformed to His, calling us to love and respect all His people.

“This year, on June 16—the day of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus—a professional baseball team has shockingly chosen to honor a group whose lewdness and vulgarity in mocking our Lord, His Mother, and consecrated women cannot be overstated. This is not just offensive and painful to Christians everywhere; it is blasphemy.

“It has been heartening to see so many faithful Catholics and others of good will stand up to say that what this group does is wrong, and it is wrong to honor them. We call on Catholics to pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart on June 16, offering this prayer as an act of reparation for the blasphemies against our Lord we see in our culture today.”

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles in a statement said:

The forthcoming Dodgers event honoring a group that mocks women religious, and worse, desecrates the Cross, profanes the Eucharist, and disrupts Holy Mass has caused disappointment, dismay, and pain in our Catholic community, as well as among our fellow Christians and people of good will.

Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most amiable and adorable heart of Jesus! Center of all hearts, glowing with charity, and inflamed with zeal for the interest of thy Father, and the salvation of mankind! O heart ever sensible of our misery, and ever in motion to redress our evils, the real victim of love in the Holy Eucharist, and propitiatory sacrifice for sin on the altar of the cross! seeing that the generality of Christians make no other return for these thy mercies than contempt of thy favors, forgetfulness of their own obligation, and ingratitude to the best of benefactors; is it not just that we your servants, penetrated with the deepest sense of the like indignities, should enter upon a due and satisfactory reparation of honor to thy most sacred majesty? Prostrate in body and humbled in mind, before heaven and earth, we solemnly declare our utter detestation and abhorrence of such conduct.

Inexpressible, we know, was the bitterness, which the multitude of our sins brought on thy tender heart; insufferable the weight of our iniquities which pressed thy face to the earth in the Garden of Olives, and unsurmountable your anguish, when expiring with love, grief, and agony on Mount Calvary, in your last breath, you would reclaim sinners to their duty and repentance. This we know, O dear Redeemer! and would most willingly redress these your sufferings by our own, or share with thee in thine.

O merciful Jesus! Ever present on our altars, and with a heart open to receive all, who labor and are burdened! O adorable

Heart of Jesus, source of true contrition! Impart to our hearts the true spirit of penance, and to our eyes a fountain of tears, that we may bewail and wash off our sins and those of the world. Pardon, divine Jesus, all the injuries, reproaches, and outrages done to you through the course of your holy life and bitter passion. Pardon all the impieties, irreverences, and sacrileges, which have been committed against you in the sacrament of the Eucharist from its first institution. Graciously receive the small tribute of our sincere repentance as an agreeable offering in your sight, and in requital for the benefits we daily receive from the altar, where you are a living and continual sacrifice, and in union of that bloody holocaust you presented to your eternal Father on mount Calvary from the cross.

Sweet Jesus! Give your blessing to the ardent desire we now entertain and the holy resolution we have taken, of ever loving and adoring you after a proper manner in the sacrament of love, the Eucharist, to repair by a true conversion of heart and a becoming zeal for your glory, our past negligence and infidelity. O adorable Heart who knows the clay of which we are formed, be our mediator with thy heavenly Father, whom we have so grievously offended; strengthen our weakness, confirm our resolution, and with your charity, humility, meekness, and patience, cover the multitude of our iniquities; be our support, our refuge, and our strength, that nothing else in life or death may separate us from thee. Amen.
