On May 10, Ohio Right to Life’s Down Syndrome Non-Discrimination Act (HB 214) was introduced in the Ohio House by pro-life Representatives Sarah LaTourette and Derek Merrin. If signed into law, this would prohibit an abortion of any unborn child based upon that child having Down syndrome.
Children diagnosed in utero with disabilities are aborted at an alarmingly high rate. Nine hospital-based studies found the rate of abortion at their institutions to be as high as 85% when a preborn child is diagnosed with Down syndrome. By the time that Down syndrome can be diagnosed, the baby is already in the second trimester of development.
